That is a narrow list on purpose. Springs are the part of a garage door where the gap between adequate work and good work is widest, and where the difference is hardest for a homeowner to see.

What Made Us Narrow the List

Most of what we get called out to is not a broken spring. It is a door that was worked on eighteen months ago and has never been right since. It drifts down when you stop it. It thumps at the floor. The opener strains on the last foot of travel. One cable is already showing a whisker of fray.

None of that is a failed part. It is a spring that was never matched to the door, wound by eye, and handed back without anyone lifting the door to check.

The Habits We Do Not Skip

We weigh the door or work its weight out properly before choosing wire size and inside diameter. We change both springs on a two spring system. We fit new end bearings and a new centre plate while the shaft is out, because they are inexpensive and the shaft will not be out again for years. We seat the drums square and set the cables to matched tension. Then we disconnect the opener, lift the door by hand, stop it halfway and let go, and we do not reconnect anything until it stays put.

Last comes the opener. New springs change the load, so the force settings and the travel limits get reset and the safety reverse retested, as UL 325 expects.
