The Half of the Job That Happens After the Parts Are On

Fitting a spring is mechanical. Setting it is judgement. This page is about the second half, because it is the half that gets left out.

A garage door opener is not a lifting machine. It is a positioning machine. The springs carry the weight, and the opener only supplies the small push needed to start the door moving and the control to stop it in the right place. When that relationship is correct, a half horsepower unit will run a two hundred pound door for twenty years without complaint.

When the balance is out, the opener starts doing work it was never designed for, and it does it silently until the day it stops.

The Test Itself

It takes half a minute and you can do it yourself tonight.

  1. Close the door and pull the emergency release cord so the trolley disconnects from the opener.
  2. Lift the door by hand. It should feel like maybe eight to ten pounds throughout, not fifty.
  3. Stop it at about waist height and let go.
  4. Watch.

A correctly wound door stays where you left it, or drifts an inch or two. A door that sinks steadily to the floor is under sprung, either the wrong spring or not enough turns. A door that climbs is over sprung, which is less common and just as wrong, and it makes the door dangerous to leave partly open.

Correcting the Wind

Turns are calculated from door height, roughly four quarter turns per foot of travel as a starting point, and then adjusted on the actual door. The calculation gets you close. The balance test tells you the truth.

A quarter turn either way is a real, visible change. Somebody who winds to a formula and drives away has not finished the job, they have finished the arithmetic.

The other thing that shows up here is uneven cable tension. If the door holds at waist height but one side sits a fraction lower at the floor, the drums are not set alike. That will fray a cable eventually, and it is a ten minute fix at this stage.

Resetting the Opener

New springs change the load, so every setting the opener learned against the old springs is now wrong.

Force settings. Up and down force get reset to the minimum that reliably moves the door. Leaving them where a failing spring pushed them means the opener will happily drive through an obstruction rather than reversing off it.

Travel limits. Down limit set so the bottom seal compresses and no further. Set too deep and the opener keeps pushing after the door has landed, which slackens the cables at the drum and lets them jump the groove. Up limit set so the door stops short of jamming the top section into the header.

Safety reverse. UL 325 requires both a contact reverse and photo eyes on residential openers. We put a two by four flat on the floor under the door and confirm it reverses on contact, then break the beam mid travel and confirm it reverses again. Sensors get realigned if the indicator lights are not steady.

Battery backup. California SB-969 has required a battery backup on newly installed residential openers since July 2019. If we are replacing an opener rather than servicing one, it comes with a backup. If yours is older it is not compulsory, but a garage that only opens with power is worth thinking about during a red flag wind event.

When It Is the Opener and Not the Springs

Sometimes a homeowner has already spent money on springs and the door is still misbehaving. Worn gear and sprocket assemblies, a stripped trolley, a chain with too much sag, and a rail that was never shimmed level all produce symptoms that get blamed on balance.

The balance test separates them cleanly. If the door behaves perfectly by hand and badly on the opener, the springs are fine and you have an opener problem. That is a cheaper conversation, and it is worth having before anyone quotes you for springs a second time.
